DESIGNER/COMPANY/LOCATION:
Wachenheimer Brothers (1905-1934):
Located in Providence, Rhode Island, Wachenheimer Bros. Inc. was one of many casualties among American costume jewelry manufacturers during the Great Depression. The firm was started in 1905 by Jacob, Harry and Samuel Wachenheimer, the sons of German-born immigrants who settled in Manhattan. Best known for their
Diamonbar
trademark and
Flexible
bracelets, Wachenheimer Brothers manufactured high-quality sterling silver jewelry. Following the stock market crash in 1929, the jewelry industry was especially hard hit and with their business failing, the brothers dissolved the corporation on May 10, 1933 though operations continued for another year. Thanks to the company’s belief in high-quality design and construction, Harry’s inventiveness, and the talent of their workers, many Diamonbar bracelets have survived and still bring delight to those of us who are lucky to own them.
METAL:
Sterling Silver
DETAILS:
~ 1920s Art Deco Era “Flexible” Diamonbar Bracelet *Starting in the 1910s, flexibility and articulation were the key elements in bracelet design. The popularity of these pieces led to another significant patent granted to Harry Wachenheimer and Ernest L. Davis in March 1917 (these pieces are stamped 3-20-17).
~ An angular Buckle Motif provides the focal point for the double line row of Round, Brilliant Cut Diamond Paste Crystals
~ The Buckle design element not only conceals the clasp, but is a very clever safety mechanism so you don’t lose your lovely. As seen in Photo 5, to undo the bracelet, first carefully flip up the buckle. Then raise the tiny bar which prevents the push-knob from depressing. Now you may push to release the Tongue & Groove Clasp and pull it open. The Wachenheimers also added a Safety Chain as a second line of defense against loss. There is a 1.25” gap when the piece is fully opened for an easy on.
~ Stamps: Sterling, Pat. 3-20-17 *The Diamonbar brand name did not get stamped as is the case sometimes, but the sterling mark & patent date are the same as pieces on which the brand did get marked. Photo 11 is an example and a mark from a Diamonbar bracelet I currently have listed. See my store Jewelry>Art Deco category.
~ The last photo (for reference only) is from a 1926 catalog depicting Diamonbar Bracelets. The 4
th
one down is like the one offered here, but it has both diamond & sapphire paste. This one is assuredly ‘20s because Wachenheimer used simpler foldover clasps in the 1930s. Notice the prices which were high when you consider that the average U.S. household income was about per week in the mid-1920s.
CONDITION:
Excellent
Vintage condition
considering this is 90+ years old! I detect no chips and while the diamond paste isn’t as brilliant as it once was (to be expected), it still has tons of sparkle. The clasp is most secure and works perfectly. Please view all photos to judge for yourself. *Clear stones are so reflective and the most challenging to shoot – the photos don’t begin to do this lovely justice.
